Display unreadable unless you view at eye level Jan 30, 2010
By M. Prince
"The CoffeeGeek"
I bought this scale for a very specific purpose - to measure portafilters (for espresso machines) before and after coffee was added to the filter basket. The 2kg weight limit, 0.1g accuracy and the size of the weighing platform all seemed to suit.
Once I received the scale, I found a few disappointments - one is minor, but one is major enough to render the scale unusable for my needs - and since I live in Canada and ordered it to a US address, it just isn't worth the time or money to return the product - so I'm stuck with a $40 lemon - but I do want to make potential purchasers aware of a fairly glaring design problem with the scale:
The display is NOT READABLE from any angle above the scale - you have to actually bend down and get eye level with the scale to read the blue display. If you stand above the scale, or even in front of the scale looking down (as most would, if the scale is on a countertop), all you see is a blank blue display. The manufacturer is using a LED display that has very poor viewing angles.
It is a design flaw on American Weigh's part because they angled the display on this scale - if the display was flat and facing upwards, you'd probably be able to read it no problems. But because it is angled 45 degrees, reading from above shows the exceptionally poor viewing angles this cheap display has.
To use it, everyone in my workspace has to bend down so their heads are at counter height to read the display.
There is also one other minor problem - the scale seems to "float" the weight a bit before settling, especially with heavier items. It can take as much as 5 seconds for the scale to "settle down" at the final weight when I'm doing the portafilter / coffee weighing.
I do not recommend this scale.

Good Price for Good Quality Jun 02, 2009
By J. TAYLOR I purchased this scale to track the weight gain/loss of my pet parrot. Luckily this pretty sturdy scale is accurate when weighing anywhere on the stainless steel surface. *NOTE: you might want to remove the plate and reinstall it to make sure it's level (you obviously don't need to do this if the scale reads even in all four sides and center)*
The reason I rated this a 4/5 is because it is a bit laggy to bring up the weight. So it takes us plenty of tries till I get the weight right. However, if you are weighing like food or laboratory items then I doubt it would be a nuissance to you.
I really like that you can use an A/C adaptor instead of batteries. I just looked in a drawer with some old ones until I found one that worked (I've seen them on Amazon and eBay for dirt cheap too). So I would suggest picking one of these up as well, and unless you plan to keep putting it back into the box after use (which is a really snug fit) you might want to get a case/bag/sleeve for it to avoid damaging it.

Precision-accuracy-quality at a great price Jan 01, 2008
By W. Hooper Another great scale from American Weigh. Incredible repeatability regardless of sample placement on platform. Outstanding range and resolution (2000g at 0.1g res). Combine this with the best 100g/0.01g pocket scale (AWM-100) and you have an outstanding laboratory reference at a very low price.
Highly recommended for home, office, laboratory.

Easy to Use May 28, 2009
By Bryce Van Buskirk I like the size of the weight pad and seems accurate as long and you try and center the object on the pad within reason.

a good multi purpose scale Feb 26, 2009
By Massimo Potenza I decided to get a scale to count calories but wanted one that I could use for a multitude of purposes. I like the 0.1 gram resolution and the range is just about right for kitchen use.
I'll probably use this in the future to weigh mechanical parts. I tested it by weighing coins, 5 quarters weigh exactly one ounce. I don't think I'll ever use the pennyweight mode and will rarely if ever use the Troy ounce mode, but it's nice to know they're there.
If you're thinking about getting a mass to calibrate this scale, the instructions call for using a 2000g mass but only if the readings are inaccurate. Like I mentioned above, I tested it by weighing multiples of 5 quarters to make sure they came out to even ounces.
