Looks Good- Plays Mediocre Aug 06, 2010
F-styles are all too often overhyped as trumping A-styles, but don't let that blind you when purchasing a mandolin. This is a good-looking mando, and if you're just an amateur player sticking mainly to strumming, you'll be quite happy with it (and the price from the seller in this case is great- I bought mine at a used instrument store and paid over 200). But when it comes down to it, this thing is a pain to pick on- the notes just don't carry well, it's hard to pick up speed, and the action is high enough, you have to constantly have a vice-like grip on the frets to get a decent sound. The E-string especially lacks resonance; you can't get good hammer-ons, etc. Kind of a frustrating mando in general. For open string chords (D, etc) the sounds is pretty good though, with some semblance to that genuine F-style timbre.
I know I've just tossed out a barage of complaints, but amongst them all, the pressure required to get the notes to sound good ranks highest. I have massive calouses from the instruments I play, but this mando needed a whole new level of them. On most mandos I can easily bar with one finger for chords across two strings, but in this case, ended up with muting, again, without extreme pressure applied.
I had previously owned a $40, brandless A-style, and playing-wise, I'd prefer it any day over this one.
Overall, a very attractive looking mandolin with a decent sound (though I've actually come to prefer the A-style's sound). But heck, it's a Fender, and a lower end one after all. If you're a broke student like myself, you'll only have to dabble with these until you can afford a handmade.
