Great Product Sep 06, 2007
By Michael Elling You can't beat the price on this sharpner. It works fantastic. I mounted mine to my work bench and have used it extensively. The instructions it comes with are absolutely terrible, but a litttle common sense and you will figure it out.

Stay away from this unit! Nov 02, 2010
By Michael Garske I have always paid to have my chains sharpened. The last two years have required more cutting and more sharpening. Having never bought a sharpener before, I figured, go with Northern since they have been a very solid company. While sharpening my 3rd chain, smoke developed from the motor and in seconds, the motor froze solid. Cheap motor, cheap unit. Wrote the company several times without a response. Not only did I lose $41 (shipping and the unit) but Northern lost me as a customer - over $29.95. Don't purchase this unit. You will be very disappointed.

Paid for itself over and over Dec 16, 2010

Reading the other reviews I think I must have gotten the only two good sharpeners of this model. I am on my second one of these sharpeners. The first one paid for itself several times over compared to the $4 each I was paying the local guy to sharpen my chains. I sharpen at least 20-25 times per year now since I got these. I also tried sharpening my chains with a file...ah, forget that. The first one finally smoked the motor during it's second season and the second one is on it's third season now and I cut at least 10 face cord a year plus various other cuttings around the place. I am thinking about buying two more of these. They are stupid simple and stupid cheap. Well worth the money!

Don't buy it Dec 03, 2010

I bought this tool thinking that I only need to sharpen my blades a few times a year so an inexpensive model should be sufficient for my needs. I was able to sharpen 2 blades the first time I used it and put it away. I went to use it again today and the motor would come on, but the grinding wheel was not spinning. I called the customer service number and since it is under warranty they are going to send me another one. Based on the performance of this one I don't think it will do much better we will see.
Northern Chain Saw Sharpener Jan 26, 2011

I bought one of these about a year ago. Unpacked it about 3 months later [after the warranty period]. Plugged it in and sharpened 5-6 chains. At the next use the motor bogged, smoked and quit. I took it apart, checked the brushes, tested the armature continuity. The unit would run without load, but still overheated. I contacted Northern and negotiated a swap, since the unit was beyond warranty. I swapped motor heads since I had moidfied the original with a custom base and rotator cup for the grind angle. Second power head works fine. Since, I have bought a 2nd grinder so I can grind with a 1/8 or 1/16 without changing wheels.
If you go to the Northern website and read the MANY reviews, it seems this product either works out of the box or is a dud. Motor burn-out is a frequent complaint. For those with no motor issues, the unit is reliable and economically sensible. No question... the motor is undersized by at leasts 0.5 amps. As designed, not recommended for extended periods of use. I usually limit my grinding to one side of a chain, then shut down. The motor gets warm even then. If you buy it, put it to the test. Seems like if the motor is prone to fail, that should happen in the 1st hour or 2 of operation.
Innovative design by several manufactures. Assembles easily [intuitively]; Instruction book pretty worthless. I added a couple of nuts to adjustment bolts. Added a plastic bushing between the rotator assembly to minimize metal-metal wear when turning the chain.
Unit is decent construction. Grinding position of tooth easily visible. Guide rail clamp and adjustable position chain stop work as required. Pull down grinding angle make the unit compact, comfortable to operate. I mounted mine to a 2 X 8 that can be C-clamped to a bench corner.
You have to learn this machine and it will do all you want. I sharpen a lot of chains for my own use and others. These machines are slower than more expensive machines; but with practice will turn out uniformly, ripping sharp chains. You can keep all your chains sharp, fast and easy, and your cutting pleasure will go up!
I recommend the product, except for the hassle of motor burn-out and replacement.
