 + simple; + sturdy; + well-sized spaces May 21, 2009

We needed an entryway bench, and I was thrilled to find this simple unobtrusive one on Amazon for such a reasonable price. We don't really have an entry hallway, but this bench fits neatly behind our large L-shaped sofa, giving us a place to take off our shoes and store bags & gear for the day.
INSTALLATION: The pieces were well packed with some heavy duty foam around the edges to protect during shipping. The instructions were diagram only and could have been a little more detailed in sections, but not that bad overall. It came with some interesting nuts & bolts that made it a breeze to put together solidly. I'm a petite woman and while juggling a baby, it took me less than forty minutes to set up.
USE: I have the black one and it shows dust and cat hair pretty easily, but also wipes down quickly to clean. The cubby holes are a decent size, big enough to hold a small backpack, or two pairs of shoes side by side. The whole feel is pretty sturdy and I'd buy this brand, Prepac, again in the future.

The item was packaged very well and from the packaging I would think that it is unlikely to be damaged during shipping. However, the product itself was missing large areas of the black paint/enamel coating on the compressed wood and there were numerous scratches on the pieces that were completely painted. There were also a lot of streaks from glue or some other sticky substance on the black paint/enamel.
Perhaps I simply received a "bad" product, but the whole item seems a bit "cheap" to me. The backing of this bench is a piece of painted cardboard, which is not a material that I usually associate with furniture. Others have said that the bench seems sturdy, but I do not think that it would last more than a year or two, as we intended to use it as a bench at our front door to sit on while removing shoes. If the backing was a solid piece of wood then it would strengthen it greatly, but the cardboard does not give me a lot of confidence in it's sturdiness. Therefore I returned the damaged bench immediately with no plans to order a replacement. If you are going to use this item at the foot of your bed it will likely be a great purchase, provided you don't receive a damaged product.

Perfect little bench Aug 26, 2009

We bought this to go at the end of our bed for out throw pillows when we are not using them and a little extra storage with the cubbies and it is perfect. It came in 11 pieces I believe and it was very easy to assemble, I did it myself in under an hour. The 'wood' it is made out of is actually fairly strong, I am not afraid to sit on it or put heavy items in/on it. It is the perfect width for the end of our queen size mattress and was well worth the money.

We were looking for something to hang coats on and store outdoor gear in and this works great. My husband assembled the cubbie bench in no time. We also purchased colorful baskets to hold all of our stuff. So far it's working well.

We bought this bench along with the entryway cubbie shelf that goes above it. They look great together.
Pros:
-Fantastic price, especially with free shipping. I shopped around and similar products at other places cost a lot more. A lot of the benches are smaller too.
-Good quality, sturdy. It's not simply held together with glue. You actually have these nifty metal things (sorry, I don't know what they're called or how to describe them) that hold the joints togther. We've bought a lot of assemble yourself furniture, such as from Ikea, and my husband thinks this is some of the best quality he's seen.
-Easy to put together. I don't know why some people had trouble with the directions. My husband put it together without any trouble. I glanced at the directions and they seemed straight forward to me. It took him about an hour to do each of the two pieces we purchased. Although the shelf is heavy when you hang it, it comes with a clever hanging system that takes a lot of the guess work out of it. Also makes it more stable.
-Ours didn't have any scratches, but it came with a touch up pen just in case. Very well packed.
-Looks really nice. I think the black looks especially sharp- contemporary and not cheap looking at all. We get lots of compliments.
-Holds a ton of stuff
-Fast shipping
Cons:
-The wood was surprisingly dusty when it arrived, but no big deal. Just wipe it off.
