Nice inexpensive solution for shoe organization Jun 07, 2010

We have purchased 3 of these because the price is right.
The picture with only 3 pairs of shoes in place can be misleading. What should you expect for shoe capacity? It fits 6 pairs of my men's size thirteens. My wife of course wears something more dainty and it can hold 12 pairs of her dress shoes.
This bench is made of particle board of course, so you need to make sure that you don't leave standing water around the feet (such as may happen in a mud room). Otherwise the wood will soak it up like a sponge and get ruined.) The unit does come with solid plastic feet on the bottom, but it may not been enough in some situations.
No surprise that the wood finish is fake. In fact it's a thin applique that nicks easily. Be aware the you may receive yours with nicks already in place from either the factory or shipping. If you are perfectionist and this would bother you, don't buy this unit. This is also not the piece for you if you want it to take some abuse and still look good, because the finish simply is not durable.
The strength of the bench top is good, as I weigh 210 lbs and there is no problem with me sitting on top to put on my footwear. Assembly is very easy and takes 10 minutes.
Overall, I think you get your money's worth (which is why we purchased 2 more, after the first one). Just keep in mind the caveats I have outlined. Note that this product doesn't have any of the hallmarks of a Rubbermaid product (notable lack of any rubber whatsoever, for one thing) and I imagine it is a completely outsourced product. So don't expect it to match anything you may already own from Rubbermaid.

A practical little bench for taking off your shoes when you enter your home. Just make sure you don't have huge feet like me. My size 15 men's New Balance walking shoes simply do not fit inside this unit.

I bought this because it's the perfect size for a niche location where I sit to put on my shoes. It came in a box that's 25" tall, 13-1/2" wide, and 5" deep. The pieces were separated by pieces of flat foam and there were no dings or nicks. The assembly required a phillips screwdriver and maybe a rubber mallet (but you can also just use your palm to bang some pieces closer together) and took less than an hour. All the pre-drilled holes were lined up fine so the assembly was a snap. There are two metal wires shelves that are quite sturdy. The wood components are definitely not made from particle board (as noted by another reviewer) but are either a light wood or very fine wood product (looks like the former to me). There's a decent looking veneer that makes the entire piece fairly attractive. As to how many shoes will fit on each shelf that depends on the width, and not necessarily the size, of the shoes. I wear pretty wide shoes and can only fit about 2-1/2 pairs per shelf. So for me it was not storage for "9-pairs" but just 5 pairs, but note that you can sneak a few pairs under the bottom shelf. The bench seat is strong and the box says it can support 200 pounds which I do not doubt from personal use.

We have a small kitchen with no entryway and this bench has created a nice, compact space to put our shoes. We have had this storage bench for about five months now and we have no complaints. It's well worth the cost, plus free shipping. Can't beat that!
