 Good low cost anvil Mar 10, 2010

Ideally, you want a piece of 4" by 4" top quality steel that's 1/2" thick and a perfect rectangular solid. That would require every angle to be 90 degrees, every surface to be perfectly flat, and have a perfect finish. Every one that leaves the shop would be identical. In real life, the question is how close the item comes to that with respect to how the product will be used.
The short answer is that this product will work fine for intended tasks. You need the working surface to be flat and even, and this one is as good as I hoped for.
This is a good product that stood up to scrutiny when checked carefully. I'll mention what I looked at, if only to let you know that somebody looked. But you already know my conclusion.
One side of my anvil came with a very good finish. It was smooth and flat, and held up to close inspection. The other side has the telltale signs of unevenness that an experienced metal finisher would notice immediately, but not ones that would affect the product's use. It would not be an issue if given as a gift and most people would not have seen anything that looked "wrong." All of this became irrelevant after using the product for a few minutes with a hammer.
Before I used it, I checked the better looking side for flatness with some shop tools. It passed the tests. The other side did not appear perfectly flat, and it wasn't, but it shouldn't make a practical difference. To confirm things, I placed the block on a perfectly machined metal surface on a quality router table. As expected, the anvil had no wobble at all and no signs of deviation when I used the "good" side. The other side, when placed on the same table, had a very minor wobble.
In real life, both sides are closer to 100% flat than your table or work bench is likely to be, so an extra degree of precision would not change anything. For practical purposes, anything better in a steel bench block of this size would be a waste of money.

This 4x4 steel bench block arrived quickly and well packaged. It came in a good sturdy fitted box, which is nice if you want to store it in a drawer. It came greased up just a little bit, to keep it from rusting in transit, but not too gunky. It was easily cleaned off with just a paper towel. I'm happy with it. Seems like a good deal, considering I got free shipping with Amazon Prime. Shipping is always the killer whenever I've tried to order one of these online, since it's solid steel! The only thing I've been able to find locally for this price, is a 2x2 block. So I'm very satisfied with this purchase. It's a very handy tool to have on the workbench to flatten and work-harden jumprings. And also for metal stamping and to flatten round wire.

Out of the box it had few surface cracks and chipped corners and edges,how hard is it to make smooth and even peace of metal if you plan to sell it for $20.It also came with a ratty box to keep it in,box that is't just old and used but almost ancient and falling apart from age.I will post a picture.

This Steel Bench Block Flat Anvil Jewelers Tool (4"x4"x1/2") arrived (out of the cosmolene) with long, deep scratches on the surface. These scratches will transfer to the silver pieces that I'm working; causing me more labor to remove (if possible) and, perhaps, rendering the silver piece unsuitable for selling or display. I will not purchase again from the vendor, Beadaholique.

I chose to get this size anvil even after all of the books that I had read and jewelry artists recommended the much smaller 2 and a half inch model. I don't know why. I would be irritated with one that small. I like to have room to do anything that I can think of without worrying about being centered on a small surface. I also sit mine on top of a piece of velour fabric. My desk is wood and that has kept me from scratching it. It also helps with the sound a bit. Buy this and have fun beating the heck out of something!
